Authenticity means being true to yourself. “Our biggest fear
is taking the risk to be alive and express who we really are” Miguel Ruiz.
There is nothing as simple and fulfilling like being
yourself .Yet there are many things pleasures and pressures that robs us the
opportunity of just being ourselves.
Authenticity implies genuineness. Authenticity is when what
you do is fully aligned with who you
are. The authentic self is (who you were created to be).It is the
combination of all your skills, talents, personality and passion(everything
that makes you, you). It is all of the things that are uniquely yours and need
expression; they are yours to be lived and expressed. They are not for keeps.
In life and career, it is either you are authentic or you
are fiction. Fictional self is who the world has influenced you to be, who your
environment has dictated to you to become.Fictional self is when what you do is
not in line with who you are. Spending time trying to be who you are not.
Ignoring your skills, talents and passion.
One common permitted
robber comes in different names i.e
job/career/occupation .He has a very handsome appearance ,he is always
appealing and attractive yet if care is
not taken he has a tendency of robbing
you, your authentic genuine self.
Any job or workplace
that does not endorse or encourage your authentic genuine self should be a no
go area. Irrespective of the package they are offering. It is suicidal to
accept such an offer. Accepting such offers indicates that you have not taken
stork of your life to know and understand your values. To most people accepting
such offers equals a life sentence. They never get a chance to be in touch with
who they are ever again.
There are companies you start to work for and immediately
you become a robot. Your mind stop working and you are just remote controlled.
No one cares about what you are thinking, how you are feeling, whether you have
an input or not.
The theft of authenticity or genuiness in our lives
especially in our work places left our society in great distress. It has caused
immeasurable confusion. Unavoidably the distress and confusion are carried home
and their impact will be felt by everyone around .The impact turns to grows
into an undesirable ,unwanted circle.
The importance of authenticity in our corporate and business
world cannot be over emphasized, where what you do is fully aligned with who
you are. This on its own will improve lives and reduce the stress levels of
many. I fully belief that to a certain extend depression in our society is
perpetuated by the efforts people put to be who they are not on daily basis .
The business world has been turned to be the robber of
authenticity and virtuousness. Where you have to let go of your values and
beliefs to maneuver your way to success.
Authenticity is simple you just be when you get to work, who
you are or your being flows to function.
As people become more authentic they often become more:
rational, realistic, creative,
independent, flexible, willing to correct their mistakes, respect
others, and cooperative.
Authentic people are at peace with themselves, they are composed. You
want to live around them.
Authenticity is not for cowards or for the timid but for the
strong hearted, because to be authentic, one has to conquer so much societal
stereotypes.
BE BOLD,TAKE HEART and give up your fictional self, its
straining and exhausting .
Synonyms of the word Fictional are Imaginary, unreal, story bound)
This tells that the made up
life many are trying to live can only make sense in a story. It is just
a fairy tale. The sooner we realize that this is a real life and be real by
living and expressing who we are the better.
Fictional self is ignoring your true gifts and talents while
performing assigned roles.
Fictional is when what you do is not aligned with who you are.
Fictional self is mostly about conforming to the norms of
the society at the expense of your true self.
Let us reason
together how on earth do you expect to be normal, when all you do on daily
basis is to suppress yourself, something bigger, stronger, greater that is on the inside and strive to be
something you are not.Let it explode, those who can stand it will stick around.
Fake , unreal people are most times irrational, unrealistic
,dependent, stiff, stubborn ,
disrespectful, uncooperative, frustrated .They are not at peace with themselves
thus cannot be at peace with others and you don’t want to be around them.
So let’s be real and
stop forcing matters ,with such people we cannot have a productive team.
Companies use fake to while away time or for minor errands
and jobs but sooner or later they realize that this is real life and in real
life we need real people who can express their talents and creativity. Thus
they get contractors from the outside,
pay them thousands to millions of rands for something, somebody within
can do.
He sit there depressed and crushed thinking if only I can
get a chance I can do better.( Feeling like a failure)
Some of these contractors started within and could not
afford to live a wasted life. They went outside pursued their authentic self
and now they look attractive to the world that used to look down on them.
Authentic people are appealing to the world and. Most of the time after my
talks/ presentations, I hear comments like you are a natural. Meaning more than
what I said, people are just enjoying to see Bogadi being Bogadi but not
imitating anyone else.
It is time we create a workplace culture, where everyone
have a fair chance to express their skills ,talents and passion to the full.
This will make work fun and it will be
for the good of the society at large.
When employers can start to dig for skills and talents lying
within their workforce, they will realize they have been sitting on gold. When
individuals can be challenged to fully express themselves at work they will be
happy and fulfilled and teams will be productive.
Most importantly individuals should take full responsibility
to ensure that they are set on the right career paths from the very beginning.
Paths that are aligned with who they are. And WORK will be real fun.
